Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin cultrirostris , -al suffix1.
Etymology: < scientific Latin cultrirostris (1830 as a specific name; < classical Latin cultr- , culter knife, share (see coulter n.) + rostrum beak: see rostrum n.) + -al suffix1; compare rostral adj. Compare French cultrirostre, adjective (1802 or earlier), hence used in scientific Latin as a group name, Cultrirostres (plural).
Ornithology. Now rare.
Having a bill shaped like a knife or adapted for cutting; esp. relating to a group of birds so characterized, as (originally) herons, storks, and cranes among the wading birds, or (in later use) crows, starlings, and others among the passerines.In some former schemes herons, storks, and cranes constituted the group Cultirostres.
