Origin: Apparently either (i) a borrowing from Spanish. Or (ii) a borrowing from French. Etymons: Spanish cultorista; French cultoriste.
Etymology: Apparently < either (i) Spanish cultorista (1845 or earlier; mentioned in 1816 in a text in French; apparently < classical Latin cultor cultivator (see agricultor n.) + Spanish -ista -ist suffix), or (ii) French cultoriste (1812 or earlier; < classical Latin cultor + French -iste -ist suffix). Compare earlier cultist n.1The unnaturalized Spanish form cultorista occurs earlier in English texts (as also in French ones), as does a plural form cultoristos (apparently resulting from association with the plural of Spanish nouns in -o).
