Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French cultellation.
Etymology: < French cultellation (1677 in the passage translated in quot. 1685) < post-classical Latin cultellation- , cultellatio (1611 or earlier) < classical Latin cultellāt- , past participial stem of cultellāre (in land surveying) to measure a horizontal distance by dividing it into sections ( < cultellus knife: see cultellus n.) + -iō -ion suffix1.
Obsolete.
The solution of a problem by dealing with it piecemeal; spec. (Surveying) the measuring of altitude or horizontal distance over a sloping or uneven surface by dividing it into sections and measuring each section using a chain or tape held up horizontally with a weighted pointer or ‘arrow’ dropped vertically from its end.
