Etymology: < a first element of uncertain origin (perhaps alder- prefix, used as a simple intensifier (compare alder- prefix 2), after alder-eldest at alder- prefix 1b; or perhaps alder , west midland variant of elder adj. (compare discussion at older adj. and n., and see note)) + eld n.²The dialect of MS Vespasian D.vii of the Surtees Psalter (see quot. a1400) is usually characterized as northern, but the precise provenance of the manuscript in the region of Barnoldswick in the West Riding of Yorkshire not far from the Lancashire border makes plausible the appearance of a typically west midland form like alder elder adj., if it is not simply to be interpreted as the result of general influence of the (predominantly west midland) vocabulary of alliterative verse. Apparently revived as an archaism in the 19th cent.
