Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek κριτής , -ize suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek κριτής judge (see criterion n.) + -ize suffix. Compare slightly earlier critic v., criticize v.Compare German kritisieren (late 17th cent. as critisiren ; < French critiquer critic v. + -isiren -ize suffix).
Obsolete.
transitive. To criticize (a person or thing); to subject to critical analysis; to censure, find fault with. Also intransitive (in quot. 1673 with upon).
