Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymon: Arabic al-dabarān.

Etymology: < Arabic al-dabarān < al- the + dabarān follower < dabara to turn the back, to flee, to follow. The star is so called because it rises after the Pleiades cluster of stars. Compare post-classical Latin Aldebaran (1485 or earlier).

Astronomy.

A red giant star, the brightest in the constellation Taurus. Also called alpha Tauri.
