Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymon: Portuguese aldeamento.
Etymology: < Portuguese aldeamento, aldeiamento (1820 or earlier in sense 1, 1942 or earlier in sense 2) < aldear to settle (people) in villages (a1697: < aldéa , aldeia village: see aldeia n.) + -mento -ment suffix. With the α. forms, which show omission of the Portuguese ending, compare German †Aldeament (1860 or earlier; < Portuguese).
1. In Portuguese Latin America: an early American Indian settlement established by Jesuit missionaries. Now historical.
