Forms: Also 1600s creat, (? 1700s crade).
Etymology: apparently < Latin crātis hurdle. But connection with Dutch krat basket, and its cognates is not impossible. Compare especially dialect Dutch krat, kret, a ladder-shaped frame attached to the back of a wagon to extend its area.
1. A hurdle or frame of parallel cross bars. Obsolete.
