Brit. /ˈkramɔɪzi/, /ˈkraməzi/, U.S. /ˈkræmɔɪzi/, /ˈkræməzi/, Scottish English /ˈkramɔɪzɪ/, /ˈkraməzɪ/
Forms: Middle English cremesye, cremysy, cramysse, Middle English–1500s crammas(s)y, 1500s cram(m)esy, cram(m)osie, cram(m)osye, 1600s crambassie, cramoisy, (archaic1700s cramasie, 1800s cramasye, cramoisy, cramoisie, cramoisay).
Etymology: < early Italian cremesí and Old French crameisi, later cramoisi = Spanish carmesí , Portuguese carmezim ; the original type is seen in Italian chermesí , chermizí , < Arabic qirmazī of or belonging to the qirmiz , kermes n. or alkermes n., the Scarlet Grain insect: see crimson adj. and n. Since the 16th cent. there has been a tendency to assimilate the spelling to modern French cramoisi, which has been facilitated by the fact that the word is itself obsolete and the tradition of its English spelling and pronunciation broken.
