Etymology: < (i) French couzeranite, couseranite (J. de Charpentier 1823), and its etymon (ii) German Couzeranit, Couseranit (J. de Charpentier 1816, in Taschenbuch für die Gesammte Mineralogie 10 303) < Couserans , †Couzerans , the name of a former province in south-western France (now part of the department Ariège) + -it -ite suffix¹.The name of the region (French Couserans, Occitan Coserans) derives from classical Latin Consorannī, the name of a pre-Roman, probably Aquitanian people living in the region at the time of the Roman conquest; further etymology unknown.

Mineralogy. Now rare or disused.

An aluminosilicate mineral containing calcium and potassium, typically forming rectangular or rhomboidal prisms.Couseranite is now identified as a variety of marialite (marialite n. 2).

1955 tr. C. P. A. Zeijlmans Van Emmichoven in N. S. Haile Geol. Accts. W. Borneo viii. 186 Chlorite, pargasite, couseranite (a few crystals of which are pseudomorphs after plagioclase) and tourmaline also occur.
