Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Criniger.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Criniger ( C. J. Temminck Manuel d'ornithologie (ed. 2, 1820) I. p. lx) < classical Latin crīniger long-haired (see crinigerous adj. at crini- comb. form ).
Ornithology.
A genus of African and Asian bulbuls (family Pycnonotidae), which have bristly hairlike feathers around the bill. Also: a bird of this genus (now rare).
