Etymology: Ultimately < Maghribi Arabic kuskus (also kuskusū; < a Berber language: compare e.g. Tarifit seksu, Tuareg keskesu), in early use via various other European languages; compare French couscous (1636; also †couscou, †couscousou, †couscoussou, †couscoussous, etc.; 1505 in Middle French as couchou), post-classical Latin cuscusu (1556 in Leo Africanus), Italian cuscus (1563 as cuscusu, late 19th cent. as cuscussù), and also (with prefixed Arabic definite article al-) Spanish alcuzcuz (15th cent.).Arabic kaskasa ‘to pound or bruise into small pieces’ is not the etymon of the Arabic noun, but a denominal derivative of it. Specific forms. The β. forms ultimately reflect the Arabic variant kuskusū; they are partly transmitted via other European languages, e.g. Latin and French. For these, N.E.D.
