Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin abvolat-, abvolare.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin abvolat-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of abvolare (in 16th-cent. editions of ancient authors and in 16th-cent. Latin-English dictionaries), alteration of classical Latin āvolāre to fly off or away (see avolate v.), with substitution of (etymologically identical) ab- ab- prefix for the first element.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
intransitive. To fly away.
