craftilyadv.

Brit. /ˈkrɑːftᵻli/, /ˈkraftᵻli/, U.S. /ˈkræftəli/
Forms:

α. Old English cræftiglice, Old English cræftilice (rare), Middle English craftili, Middle English craftilich, Middle English craftiliche, Middle English craftilik (northern), Middle English craftilyche, Middle English craftyliche, Middle English creftiluker (comparative), Middle English–1500s craftyly, Middle English– craftily, 1500s crafftily.

β. Middle English crafteli, Middle English crafteliche, Middle English–1500s craftely, Middle English–1500s craftelye, 1500s crafftelie, 1500s–1600s craftelie; Scottish pre-1700 craftelie, pre-1700 craftellie, pre-1700 craftelly, pre-1700 craftely, pre-1700 craftelye, pre-1700 craiftelie.

Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: crafty adj., -ly suffix2.
Etymology: < crafty adj. + -ly suffix2. Compare craftly adv. and craftily adj.Compare Middle Dutch crachtichlike strongly, powerfully, Old Saxon kraftiglīko powerfully (Middle Low German kreftichlīk ), late Old High German kreftiglīcho strongly, powerfully (Middle High German krefticlīche , German kräftiglich , now rare). Forms with medial vowel. In Middle English and early modern English forms with medial -e- (see β. forms), this word is difficult to distinguish from craftly adv.; some of the examples given here could alternatively be analysed as showing that word. A significantly earlier β. form is perhaps shown by Old English cræftelīce (see discussion at craftly adv.).
1. Skilfully; in a manner requiring or demonstrating knowledge, expertise, or craftsmanship. Now rare.In later use often with implication of cleverness or artfulness probably influenced by sense 2.
