单词 courbette
释义

courbetten.

Brit. /(ˌ)kɔːˈbɛt/, /(ˌ)kʊəˈbɛt/, U.S. /ˌkʊ(ə)rˈbɛt/
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French courbette.
Etymology: < French courbette (a1559 in Middle French), probably < courber curve v. + -ette -et suffix1. Compare earlier curvet n., curvetting n.Although the French noun was formerly regarded as a loan < Italian corvetta curvet n., the Italian noun is not securely attested until slightly later and is itself probably a loan < French. With the French noun perhaps compare also Middle French corbete garland (1351; < corbe curve n. + -ete -et suffix1) and also Middle French, French courbetter in transitive use (see curvet v.), which may imply earlier currency of the noun.
As a technical term of the haute école of horsemanship: a leap in which a trained horse rears up and jumps forward on the hind legs without the forelegs touching the ground. Cf. curvet n. 1.
