1. The governing body of a county in Great Britain and Ireland.Prior to 1889, government at county level was chiefly the responsibility of the local magistracy, to which early quots. refer. The Local Government Act 1888 established elected, representative county councils in England and Wales for the first time. County councils were in existence in Scotland between 1890 and 1975. The Local Government Act (Ireland) 1898 introduced county councils in Ireland on the British model. They were abolished in Northern Ireland in 1973 but remain in existence in the Republic.
