Etymology: < Irish crios girdle, belt (Early Irish cris), cognate with Welsh crys shirt, undergarment (13th cent.), further etymology uncertain.A relationship ultimately with the Indo-European base of classical Latin circus circle (see circus n.) has been suggested, but would require a significantly different formation from that word (with dental rather than velar extension and further suffix). The plural form criosanna reflects the plural of the Irish word.
