Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: alisma n., -aceous suffix.
Etymology: < alisma n. + -aceous suffix, after scientific Latin Alismaceae, former family name ( A. P. de Candolle and J.-B. P. A. de Lamarck Synopsis plantarum in Flora Gallica descriptarum (1806) 155). Compare French alismacée, adjective and noun (1838).
Botany. Now rare.
Characteristic of or belonging to the former family Alismaceae (now Alismataceae), comprising monocotyledonous aquatic and marshland plants found chiefly in north temperate regions, of which Alisma is the type genus.
