Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: alimentive adj., -ness suffix.
Etymology: Apparently < alimentive adj. (although this is first attested slightly later) + -ness suffix. Compare slightly later alimentative adj. 2 and alimentativeness n.
Now rare.
The propensity to seek food or drink, spec. as one of the faculties assigned by phrenologists to a (supposed) specific organ (organ n.1 9); the organ itself. Also: appetite or taste for food and drink.
