单词 abutilon
释义

abutilonn.

Brit. /əˈbjuːtᵻlən/, /əˈbjuːtᵻlɒn/, U.S. /əˈbjudlˌɑn/
Forms: 1500s– Abutilon, 1700s Abuttillon, 1800s– Abutillon. Also with lower-case initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Abutilon.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Abutilon (1507 in a translation of Avicenna's Canon of Medicine) < Arabic 'wbwṭylwn (a1037 in Avicenna Canon II. ii. xxvii.), a word of uncertain meaning, etymology, and pronunciation (the precise vocalization being uncertain, as only consonants are normally written in the Arabic script). The initial a in the Latin word may be due to a mistranscription of the Arabic word. The post-classical Latin word was also borrowed into other European languages; compare Middle French, French abutilon (1557; also †abutillon (1649)), Spanish abutilón (1606).
Any of various mallows constituting the genus Abutilon (family Malvaceae), which comprises evergreen tropical and subtropical shrubs or small trees with large, pendulous five-petalled flowers in various colours borne on long slender stems (cf. Indian mallow n. at Indian adj. and n. Compounds 1a(b)); (now) esp. any of the many varieties and hybrids grown for ornament. Also (in form Abutilon): the genus itself.Valid publication of the genus name: P. Miller Gardeners Dict.: Abridged (ed. 4, 1754) I.
