Etymology: < the name of Alfonso Corti (1822–76), Italian anatomist, who described the organ in 1851 ( Zeitschr. f. Wissensch. Zool. 3 109).

Anatomy and Zoology.

1. In the genitive, attributive, and with of, esp. in organ of Corti. Designating a ridge of highly specialized epithelium within the cochlea, containing hair cells that are the receptors for sound.
