Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: alcohol n., -ize suffix.
Etymology: < alcohol n. + -ize suffix, partly after French alcooliser, †alcoholiser to concentrate (a liquid) to an essential spirit (1620 as †alcolizé , past participle), to reduce to a powder (1683 or earlier; the sense ‘to subject (a person) to the influence of alcohol’ is not paralleled in French until later than in English: 1892). Compare post-classical Latin alcoolisare (1688 or earlier). Compare earlier alcoholizate v., alcoholizated adj., alcoholized adj., and alcoholization n.
