Etymology: Partly (i) < (a) French alcoolisation (1628 or earlier as †alcoholisation in the obsolete sense ‘pulverization’; also †alkoholisation ; now chiefly in senses ‘development of properties characteristic to alcohol’ (1838), ‘action of mixing (a liquid) with alcohol’ (1845)), and its etymon (b) post-classical Latin alcoholization-, alcoholizatio pulverization (1624 or earlier; < alcoholizatus (see alcoholizated adj.) + classical Latin -iō -ion suffix1); partly (ii) < alcohol n. + -ization suffix; and partly (iii) < alcoholize v. + -ation suffix. Compare earlier alcoholizate v.
