Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: alcohol n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < alcohol n. + -ist suffix, after alcoholism n. Compare German Alkoholist (1861 or earlier; now rare, the usual word is Alkoholiker alcoholic n.), French alcooliste (1869 or earlier; compare anti-alcooliste teetotaller, adherent of the temperance movement (1854 or earlier)), both in sense ‘person addicted to alcoholic drinks’. Compare earlier alcoholic n. 2.
Originally: an advocate of the freedom to drink alcoholic drinks, a person who is against prohibition (prohibition n. 4b) (now historical). In later use also: a person addicted to alcoholic drink.
