Forms: Middle English–1500s coriandre, (Middle English coriande, 1500s corandre, corriandir), Middle English– coriander.
Etymology: < French coriandre, < Latin coriandrum , < Greek κορίαννον (apparently a foreign word). An early popular Latin variant coliandrum gave Old English cellendre , Old High German chullantar , Old French coliandre , whence earlier English coliander n.
1. An annual plant, Coriandrum sativum, family Umbelliferæ, with compound leaves and globose fruit; a native of Southern Europe, the Levant, etc., naturalized in some parts of England. The fruit is carminative and aromatic, and used for flavouring purposes.
