Erroneously inferred, with the sense ‘a gap between hills’, from at Corfgeate (F; Latin Porta Corf), æt Corfes geate (E) of  Anglo-Saxon Chron. an. 978, lit. ‘at Corf's gate’, the cleft in the chalk hills which was the site of the later Corfe Castle.
