单词 cordyceps
释义

Cordycepsn.

Brit. /ˈkɔːdᵻsɛps/, U.S. /ˈkɔrdəˌsɛps/
Inflections: Plural unchanged;
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Cordyceps.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Cordyceps, genus name (1818, E. M. Fries), alteration (with substitution of -ceps , combining form of caput head: see caput n.) of Cordylia (1818 in an article by E. M. Fries), probably < ancient Greek κορδύλη club (see cordyline n.) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix1, perhaps so called on account the appearance of the fruiting bodies of these fungi, which have rounded ends and may be thought to resemble clubs.
Mycology.
A genus of ascomycetous fungi of the family Cordycipitaceae, members of which are parasitic chiefly on insects, replacing the host tissue with mycelium and producing prominent elongated fruiting bodies. Also: a fungus of (or previously included in) this genus; esp. Ophiocordyceps sinensis, used medicinally and in Chinese cookery. Cf. vegetable caterpillar n. at vegetable adj. Compounds 2.Valid publication of the genus name: E. M. Fries Observationes Mycologicae (1818) II. 316 (cancellans issue).Some species previously included in the genus Cordyceps are now placed in the genera Ophiocordyceps and Tolypocladium (family Ophiocordycipitaceae).These fungi often affect the behaviour of a host insect, causing it to move to a location favourable for the release of fungal spores.
