Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin cordi-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin cordi-, combining form (in e.g. cordiformis cordiform adj.) of classical Latin cord- , cor heart ( < the same Indo-European base as heart n.); compare -i- connective. Compare cardio- comb. form.Compare French cordi- . Cordi- also occurs in variation with cardi- , in e.g. cordiacle at cardiacle n. Forms, and cordyake , cordiack at cardiac adj. and n. Forms, reflecting similar variation in post-classical Latin, where cordiacus is attested as a variant of cardiacus . With cordignostick (see quot. 1659 ) compare cardiognostic n. With cordialgic (see quot. 1725 ) compare post-classical Latin cordialgicus (1620 or earlier).
Obsolete.
Forming adjectives and nouns relating to the heart.In most cases the words so formed have more common synonyms beginning with cardi-; cf. cardio- comb. form.
