Etymology: < post-classical Latin Alcmanius (5th cent.; < classical Latin Alcmān (ancient Greek Ἀλκμάν ), the name of a Greek lyric poet active in Sparta in the 7th cent. b.c. + -ius , suffix forming adjectives) + -an suffix. Compare Hellenistic Greek Ἀλκμάνειος . Compare slightly earlier Alcmanic adj.
