Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin alchimicus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin alchimicus of or relating to alchemy (from 13th cent. in British and continental sources) < alchimia alchemy n. + classical Latin -icus -ic suffix. Compare Middle French alkimique , Middle French, French alchimique (second half of the 14th cent. in an isolated attestation as alquinique (transmission error) in figurative sense ‘counterfeit’, 1547 or earlier in sense ‘of or relating to alchemy’), German †alchimisch (1529 as †alchimeisch ; also †alchemisch ; the usual German adjective is alchimistisch alchemistic adj.). Compare chemic adj., chemical adj., and earlier alchemical adj.
