Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Tagalog. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Tagalog korido; Spanish corrido.
Etymology: < Tagalog korido and its etymon Spanish corrido (in Latin America) kind of popular narrative song (1689 in a Mexican source, or earlier), (in Spain) sung romance (originally characteristic of Andalusia; compare romance n. 2a) (1729 or earlier), (in the Philippines) poem narrating historical or legendary events and composed in octosyllabic lines (1896 or earlier), use as noun of past participle of correr to run (see curreter n.).For most of the period of Spanish administration, the Philippines were governed from Mexico, not directly from Spain, so the word was probably transmitted to the Philippines via American Spanish.
