Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin alburnum.
Etymology: < classical Latin alburnum (Pliny), use as noun of neuter of alburnus white, gleaming (attested in undated glossaries) < albus white (see album n.2) + -urnus , perhaps after eburnus made of ivory (see eburnation n.).
The whiter, softer, and more recently formed wood of a tree, situated between the bark and the heartwood; the sapwood.
