Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek ἀίλουρος , αἰέλουρος , -phile comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀίλουρος (also αἰέλουρος) cat (perhaps (as reported by ancient grammarians) < an ablaut variant of αἰόλος swift (see aeolotropic adj.) + οὐρά tail (see uro- comb. form2), so called on account of the swift movement to and fro of the cat's tail) + -phile comb. form. Compare earlier ailurophobe n. O.E.D. (1989) gives the headword as ailurophil(e), and gives the pronunciation as /aɪˈl(j)ʊərəʊfaɪl/, /aɪˈl(j)ʊərəʊfɪl/.
A person who is fond of or enthusiastic about cats; a cat-lover. Cf. ailurophobe n.
