Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French alette.

Etymology: < Anglo-Norman alette (1313 or earlier; second half of the 13th cent. or earlier as alecte ; compare Old French eslete (1318); French ailette ), specific use of alette little wing (1164 in Old French; Middle French, French ailette (from 1564 in this sense)) < ale wing (see aisle n.) + -ete -ette suffix; compare -et suffix¹. In later use in form ailette remodelled after < French ailette (although this is apparently first attested later in this specific sense: 1866). Compare post-classical Latin aletta (frequently from 1278 in British sources; < French), Old Occitan aleta (1438).The form alette, which is not paralleled in modern French, apparently shows a modern reborrowing of Anglo-Norman alette.

Each of a pair of pieces of leather or other material worn over the shoulders as part of the accoutrements of an armoured knight or man-at-arms.Now generally thought to have been worn primarily for purposes of heraldic display or other decoration rather than for protection.
