Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from a language of Sierra Leone.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < a language of Sierra Leone, perhaps either (a) with remodelling by association with coquet n. and -oon suffix, or perhaps (b) (if taken from a Creole language) ultimately reflecting an otherwise unattested derivative of French coquet coquet adj.J. E. Gray, who first used this name (compare quot. 1846) cites it alongside a location in Waterloo on the West Coast of Sierra Leone.
Now historical and rare.
A small antelope of western and central Africa, Cephalophus rufilatus, which has a reddish-brown body with a pale belly and dark grey back and legs. In later use also coquetoon antelope.Now called red-flanked duiker.Now only in lists of alternative names for the animal.
