单词 aikuchi
释义

aikuchin.

Brit. /ʌɪˈkʊtʃi/, U.S. /aɪˈkʊtʃi/
Inflections: Plural unchanged.
Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese aikuchi.
Etymology: < Japanese aikuchi, literally ‘fitting the mouth’ (early 15th cent. as afikuchi < afi- , nominalized stem of afu- , now au to fit, match (see aikijutsu n.) + kuchi mouth, aperture, opening of a scabbard), so called on account of the snug fit between the hilt-collar and the opening of the scabbard in the absence of a guard. The Japanese word was traditionally written with kanji for ‘to fit’ and ‘mouth’, but is now frequently written with kanji corresponding to Chinese kind of ancient spoon, guardless dagger, and shǒu neck. Compare Chinese bǐshǒu guardless dagger (already in Old Chinese).
A dagger or short sword manufactured without a hilt-guard, so that the hilt fits flush with the scabbard.
