Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French cotignat.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman cotegnate quince marmalade (1436 or earlier) and Middle French coudignat, French †codignat, †cotignat in the same sense (1534 in Middle French as cotoniat), ultimately (perhaps partly via Italian) < Old Occitan codonhat (see codiniac n.).
Obsolete.
Marmalade or conserve, esp. made from quinces; = codiniac n.
