Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymon: Portuguese .
Etymology: < Portuguese (17th cent.) < Tupi , imitative of the animal's cry (1587 in a Portuguese context, 1560 in a post-classical Latin context as aig). Compare French (1578 in Middle French as hay), scientific Latin ai, former specific name (1827).
A three-toed sloth (genus Bradypus, family Bradypodidae); esp. the pale-throated sloth, B. tridactylus. B. tridactylus was formerly the only known three-toed species. The name ai has been used for several species now recognized.
