Forms: also with lower-case initials.
Origin: Apparently from a proper name. Etymon: proper name A-Bêng.
Etymology: Apparently < Chinese (Hokkien) A-Bêng, of uncertain origin. Perhaps compare Abing, the nickname of the popular Chinese musician Hua Yanjun (1893–1950, also known as Blind Abing) which came to describe a fashionable style of sunglasses.The word is also sometimes explained as a specific use of A-Bêng, familiar form of address for a person with the male forename Bêng, although the second element of this is written with a different character.
Singapore English and Malaysian English (derogatory).
A young man of a type characterized by the wearing of fashionable or designer clothing and by behaviour considered brash and loutish. Frequently attributive.Often with connotations of low social status.
