Etymology: < Agulhas (formerly also L'Agullas, Lagullus, Lagullas) in the names of Cape Agulhas, a headland which forms the southernmost point of Africa, and of the Agulhas Bank (also Bank of Agulhas etc.), the associated oceanic shelf + current n.The English name of the headland reflects the Portuguese name Cabo das Agulhas (also Cabo Agulhas ), lit. ‘Cape of Needles’ (1505 as †Cabo dos agulhos ; compare Golfo das Agulhas (1502 on Alberto Cantino's world map, denoting the bay directly to the east of the cape)). The motivation for naming is unclear; for an early explanation, see:1598 W. Phillip tr. J. H. van Linschoten Disc. Voy. E. & W. Indies iii. ii. 310/1 Also by this Cape the needle of the compasse is right and even: so that when it is noone by the Astrolobie, it is likewise noone by the sunne diall, or the compasse both agreeing in one, which is a good signe that you are North and South with the Cape das Agulhas.However, other sources favour allusion to pointed rocks in the sea in this region, which was notoriously hazardous to shipping (compare needle n. 10). The β. forms reflect English forms of the name of the cape and bank in L- (see above); with these compare L'Agulhas, the name of the town on this headland.
