Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish aguardiente.
Etymology: < Spanish aguardiente (c1406; 2nd half of the 14th cent. as agua ardent , agua ardiente ) < agua water (see aqua n.1) + ardiente burning, that burns (see ardent adj.). Compare post-classical Latin aqua ardens (14th cent. in British sources), Catalan aiguardent (15th cent.), Portuguese aguardente (16th cent.; 15th cent. as agua ardente). The β. forms show remodelling after aqua n.1 or formations in aqua- comb. form. Compare also the following, apparently showing isolated borrowing of the Portuguese word:1835 J. E. Alexander Sketches in Portugal v. 117 The moment it was ascertained that a man had sold a shirt of any article of his kit for aguardente, the whole contents of his knapsack were taken from him.1835 J. E. Alexander Sketches in Portugal v. 122 That cursed spirit aquadent, as they call it.
In Spain, Portugal, and Latin America: any of several types of strong distilled alcoholic beverage, esp. a brandy made in Spain and Portugal or a liquor made in Latin America from sugar cane.
