Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch achterrijder.
Etymology: < South African Dutch achterrijder (1st half of the 19th cent. or earlier; Afrikaans agterryer (1880; also agterruiter (now rare)) < Dutch achter after adv. + rijder rider n., perhaps after voorrijder postilion (late 17th cent.). Compare after-rider n. at after- prefix 3.With the α. forms compare rider n. In β. forms reflecting Afrikaans pronunciation and spelling conventions.
