Etymology: < agrypn- (in agrypnia n.) + -otic suffix, after hypnotic adj. and n. Compare scientific Latin agrypnotica , plural (1849 or earlier; < ancient Greek ἄγρυπνος wakeful (see agrypnia n.) + post-classical Latin -otica (see -otic suffix), after hypnotica (see hypnotic n.). Compare French agrypnotique (1875 or earlier as noun). Compare also Hellenistic Greek ἀγρυπνητικός producing wakefulness.
