Etymology: Apparently < a- prefix1 + grue v.1 (although this is first attested later: see discussion at that entry). Compare Old High German ingrūēn to shudder, to feel terror, and see discussion at in- prefix1 (compare a- prefix3). Compare also agrise v.
Obsolete. rare.
