Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < Anglo-Norman and Middle French engroté ill, suffering from nausea (1st half of the 13th cent. or earlier: see note), use as adjective of engroté past participle of Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French engroter to be ill, fall ill (12th cent.), to sicken, make ill (13th cent.; also as egrutir , engruter , engrouter ; < classical Latin aegrōtare to be ill (see aegrotant n.), with alteration of the initial syllable after en- en- prefix¹), with reduction or substitution of the prefix either in French or in English (compare Old French agroté ill (13th cent, in an apparently isolated attestation), Middle French aggroté struck by illness, sick (1501)).
