Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin agrostis.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin agrostis dog's tooth grass (4th cent.) < ancient Greek ἄγρωστις dog's tooth grass, feminine form corresponding to ἀγρώστης countryman < ἀγρός field (see agro- comb. form) + -της, suffix forming agent nouns, with unexplained -σ-. Compare French agrostis (1783 or earlier).

Any of numerous grasses found in temperate climates worldwide constituting the genus Agrostis, which includes some important turf and forage grasses, as creeping bent grass, A. stolonifera, and common bent grass, A. capillaris.
