Etymology: Probably < on grufe at groof n. and adv. 1, with reduction of the first element (compare a prep.1). Compare earlier grovelling adv., groof n. and adv. 3. N.E.D. (1884) notes: ‘In common use in Sc. and North English dial.’, but modern evidence from England is lacking.
Chiefly Scottish.
In or into a prone position; face downwards. Also figurative. Cf. on grufe at groof n. and adv. 1.
