Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: -phile comb. form, -ic suffix.
Etymology: < -phile comb. form + -ic suffix (compare ancient Greek ϕιλικός friendly). Compare French -philique (19th cent., rare).Formations are found from the mid 19th cent. They were originally modelled on nouns in -philia comb. form or -phily comb. form or adjectives in -phile comb. form, but formations without such an earlier model are found from the late 19th cent. (e.g. psychrophilic adj.). Most formations have first elements of Greek origin. Compare -philous comb. form.
Forming adjectives (and derived nouns) with the senses:
1. ‘Having a tendency to’ (chiefly in haemophilic adj. at haemophilia n. Derivatives, spasmophilic adj. at spasmophilia n. Derivatives).
2. (Of a person) ‘liking, loving’ (as in oenophilic adj.), and esp. ‘having a sexual interest in’ (as in paedophilic adj. and n.).
3. (Of a thing) ‘having an affinity for’ (as in lyophilic adj.); esp. (of an organism) ‘inhabiting, growing, or flourishing in (a type of environment)’ (as in mesophilic adj.); (of a cell, etc.) ‘susceptible to staining by (a particular dye)’ (as in polychromatophilic adj.).
