Etymology: < cool adj. + -th suffix1. The examples below probably reflect a number of separate instances of formation of the same word, chiefly after warmth n. Compare Old Dutch cuolitha.The forms kilthe, kelthe, kelth which occur in various 15th-cent. manuscripts of the Middle English text Sidrak and Bokkus (also in a 16th-cent. printed version keelth) in the sense ‘coldness, cold’ are probably unrelated.
