Etymology: < Coolgardie, the name of a town in Western Australia (in the vicinity of which gold was discovered in 1892, resulting in considerable gold-mining activity in the 1890s and early 1900s).
Australian. Now chiefly historical.

1. attributive. Designating a type of safe or box used for keeping food cool, consisting of a rigid framework covered with hessian or netting, and cooled by damp strips of fabric hanging down the sides of the safe from a pan of water on top. Chiefly in Coolgardie safe.
